Find out why video recording your deposition could be the key to winning your case

Updated: Jan 8, 2023

The "Blurred Lines" lawsuit was a high-profile case in which the estate of Marvin Gaye, as well as Bridgeport Music and Funkadelic, sued Pharrell Williams and other co-defendants for copyright infringement. The plaintiffs claimed that the hit song "Blurred Lines," written and produced by Williams and co-defendants Robin Thicke and T.I., copied elements from Gaye's song "Got to Give It Up" and from Funkadelic's song "Sexy Ways."

The case went to trial in 2015, and after a lengthy legal battle, a jury found in favor of the plaintiffs and awarded them $7.4 million in damages. The defendants appealed the decision, and in 2018 a federal appeals court upheld the jury's verdict but reduced the damages to $5.3 million. The defendants then appealed to the Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court declined to hear the case, leaving the lower court's decision in place. The case was ultimately settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

The "Blurred Lines" lawsuit was significant because it involved the question of whether "Blurred Lines" had copied elements from the earlier songs, and if so, whether that constituted copyright infringement. The case raised important legal and cultural issues surrounding the nature of artistic influence and inspiration, as well as the extent to which one artist can borrow from another without infringing on their copyright.

Overall, the "Blurred Lines" lawsuit highlights the complex legal and artistic issues that can arise when it comes to music and copyright and serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting the intellectual property rights of others.

It seems you were trying to imitate Marvin Gaye while creating the song "Blurred Lines," Pharrell. However, it's worth noting that you cannot read music or play instruments. All you do is write lyrics, sing, and mess around with the sound mixer. Don't try to deny it. You got called out on it 😉
